The Center for Science and Technology Commercialization (CSTC) manages the commercial application of the discoveries, inventions and technologies developed at The University of Connecticut. Each year, the Center receives approximately 75 new invention disclosures and files about 20 U.S. patent applications per year. Ten to fifteen commercial development agreements (options, licenses, etc.) are completed annually. The Center contributes to the University’s overall mission by:
1. Promoting Public Benefit from the Commercialization of Technologies emerging from UConn research, including the creation of new businesses.
2. Encouraging Active Collaboration between the University and Industry;
3. Generating Funds to support the University’s research programs, and to reward innovative University inventors.
The Center for Science and Technology Commercialization is professionally staffed by Dr. Michael Newborg, Executive Director, Dr. Donna Cyr, Dr. Gregory Gallo, Dr. Charles Goodwin and Dr. Mansoor Khan, Directors of Technology Licensing, all of whom have extensive prior experience as academic researchers and as scientists/managers in the Chemical, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical or Electrical Engineering industries.
The Center:
1. Receives Invention Disclosures from faculty of the entire University, including the Health Center, Avery Point and Stamford campuses.
2. Coordinates All Patenting, Invention Evaluation and Commercial Development Activities, including those of outside organizations such as: selected law firms, which assist with patenting UConn inventions, selected consultants and commercial partners.
3. Negotiates Options and License Agreements with large and small companies for the development and commercialization of University of Connecticut technologies.
4. Provides General Information on Patents and Other Types of Intellectual Property Protection, on UConn’s patent policy, on the procedures for disclosing inventions, and on the CSTC’s criteria for evaluating new technologies.
